Meet the teachers!
Matthew Whittle
Matthew comes with 30 years in the education, starting as a tutor in high school. Matthew says his best resume is his kids. Matthew knew he should be a teacher - when he was attending a sales conference, the Sales Instructor spoke about that jazz you get when you make a sale, and to focus on that to bring meaning to your job. It dawned on Matthew that he did not get a jazz when he made a sale, but he did get a jazz when he turned a light bulb on in a student while teaching them. He finds the education field very fulfilling and his goal is to provide a better education to the students he teaches than any other teacher in the state.
Rahel Whittle
Rahel is a previous employee of the California Montessori Project, passionate about education, and a life long learner. Rahel believes that education in the core subjects of Math and English build the foundation of all the other subjects. Rahel is a homeschool mom and is proud of the level of education she has brought her own kids and feels it would help make the world a better place to provide such education to other students as well.
Our Curriculum
Our curriculum allows you to choose education in English, Math, Social Studies, Science, and STEAM. You may instruct us to focus on one area, multiple or all areas, or let it be interest led (which is the classic montessori preference). These topics are broken down into Reading, writing, spelling, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, measurements, time, currency, Ancient History, US History, California History, Economics, Biology, Astronomy, Geology, Physics, Electronics, Programming, Photography, and Drawing.
We believe in a zero screen time curriculum. Parents are free to do all the screen time they want during the hours they are not in our class. We believe the money you pay is for quality time with quality teachers, quality materials, and a quality environment.
Our curriculum is Montessori based, using hands on materials when appropriate, and with books and worksheets for more abstract concepts. Our students, in Montessori fashion pull a job which matches the level they assessed at, and work it to the best of their ability, and if needed, a teacher introduces the job. When the job is complete, or when a student is having difficulty working their job, they turn on their "need a teacher light" on to indicate to a teacher that they need attention, and a teacher will come and sign off the job if complete, or help the student through the job as needed.
Irrespective of grade level, students will be assessed for their understanding of concepts. Afterwards, each hour students will have access to a stream of material custom designed for them. This applies to all our subjects. Therefore, if a student is behind grade level in certain areas, gaps get filled, and if ahead in other areas, time isn't wasted teaching material they already know.
To the best of our ability, we will incorporate the California I Can statements for your student's grade level into the curriculum we create for them.
We teach all subjects each hour, in typical Montessori fashion, so bring your student for whatever class or classes you would like at whatever hour or hours you so choose.
Resources
K4MIE Math
This Math flashcard like exercise assists in core math skills. Kids can get frustrated with timers or any indication from the computer that they did something wrong. This math program has no timer and neither does it report that a question was done wrongly. All it does is wait for the right answer to appear, and when the right answer appears, it moves on. This way kids can build confidence in math without the negative feelings that accompany feelings of failure.
